Design Inspiration: The Collection, Part 2

2013 Grand Baroque Christmas Cross

my own Christmas tree

In September,  I did a post on organizing a collection of like items as a way of styling and creating a bigger design impact. Well - here comes Part 2 and it relates to decorating for the Holidays.

This time of year, many people have special collections that become part of their decorating.  I have seen Santa Clauses, nutcrackers, Christmas villages and ornaments…. I have a collection of  Wallace Sterling Grande Baroque Christmas Crosses.  I mentioned in my earlier post that through the process of collecting, you are better able to tell the story about why these items are so special and this post is making that case exactly.

In 1996, Wallace Silversmiths made their first ever Grande Baroque Cross.  In November of 1996, my husband and I were married and Grande Baroque was our sterling pattern.  We graciously received one as a gift and at the time did not realize it would become a collection.  We now have all 18.

As you can see above, they look beautiful on the Christmas Tree but it does not allow me to showcase the collection aspect.  Through the years I have looked for more creative ways of arranging smaller groupings. (18 pieces is a lot of pieces to "collect" in one place!)

For the past few years I have made a display in one of the kitchen windows.  I really like it.  It is simple but I think makes a nice statement.

Do you have a special collection for the holidays?

DESIGN INSPIRATION: Pantone's 2014 COLOR OF THE YEAR!

RADIANT ORCHID

In the design world, whether it is Interior Design or Fashion or anywhere in between on the design spectrum where the use of color is a dominant element, the announcement of  PANTONE'S COLOR OF THE YEAR is always anxiously awaited.  It becomes the key trendsetter for everything from handbags...to fabrics...to paint… and so on.

While I always find it exciting to hear the new color, I was especially thrilled with this year's selection as RADIANT ORCHID is one of my FAVORITE COLORS!!!   It has been the color of my dining room walls for the past 3 years and I do find it truly radiant.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute® describes the color in this way:
“An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.”
“An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, Radiant Orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”

On my walls, I have used MANUEL CANOVAS' pattern called PALI. I agree completely that it inspires confidence and emanates great joy.  It is the happiest color I have ever used in any of my projects and because it is at my own house, I get to enjoy it every single day.  Truly a mood changer. ( and much to my dismay is no longer produced in this color!)

I invite you to bring a little RADIANT ORCHID into your life somewhere in 2014. A flower, a small accessory, your office painted this fabulous new color.  I promise… you will be completely charmed by it!

DESIGN INSPIRATIONS: Decorating for Fall & Halloween

HAPPY FALL, Y'ALL!

When it comes to decorating for Fall and Halloween, every single year I hit a road block.  Christmas? Never. Valentine's or Birthdays? I am all over it.  Throwing an impromptu party? Some how I can make it come together.  But  EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR. is an issue for me and pumpkins.

I think it is because I have not figured out how to strike a balance between the whimsical and a more sophisticated decoration...and if it should require ANY crafting - I am out! I used to solve the problem by not doing anything at all... and then my children became old enough to notice and wanted to know why we were the only family without any festive decorations. Score 1 for the pumpkins.

Due to the fabulosity of PINTEREST, I thought I might finally find the answer I have been looking for..... but no! Still nothing that seems quite right.

Here are 5 pictures where I found some inspiration....what do you think?

Book of the Month: September 2013

HOT OFF THE PRESSES!!!

For those of us who love design, it does not seem to take very long for the addiction to coffee table books to kick in.  When I first purchase a new design book, I grab a pad of sticky notes and just start going through the pictures.  When I get to the end, I can tell if it is a book worthy of taking time to read the "print" if I have marked a lot of pages.  This is absolutely one of those books!

The luxe homes designed by one of Bravo TV's Million Dollar Decorators Jeffrey Alan Marks demonstrate his breezy, tailored look.  Jeffrey Alan Marks Inc. (JAM) specialized in residential and commercial interior design and architecture.  Inspired by his Southern California outdoor lifestyle, Marks's trademark looks is a synthesis of a fresh informality infused with sophisticated English and European accents.  This book showcases a series of beautifully photographed residences revealing Marks's skill at capturing each client's personality, from a movie star's London townhouse full of eccentric furnishings to a charming Nantucket cottage with nautical embellishments.  Marks's favorite shopping addresses for fabrics, furniture, and antiques complete this inspiring book.

This is a definite add to your design library!  Now, if BRAVO would just bring back Million Dollar Decorators........

DESIGN INSPIRATIONS: THE COLLECTION

Collections... They are one of my favorite things to use when styling my own home or the home of a client.  It is usually made up of something that would be a beautiful item on its own but when put together with other like items can really make a more impactful statement.  Collections can come from a wide range of items...books, boxes, shells, pictures, paper weights, art, tea pots, plates, figurines, blue and white porcelain...the list is endless.   Really, it is about what items are special to you and through the process of collecting, it allows you to tell the special story around each one.

For years, I have collected boxes.  I adore silver boxes and Limoges boxes, wooden boxes, tortoise shell boxes.  Large boxes, small boxes. ( I have even been know to collect shoe boxes!)   I have been collecting them since I was in college and it is such fun to have something special to "hunt" for when I travel.

My mother collects tea pots, my husband collects cuff links, my sister collects Herend figurines, and my mother-in-law collects cookbooks.   Is there something special you collect?  I would love to hear about it!

Happy Monday!
